Anait S. Smbatyan

Deputy Director-General

Anait Smbatyan is vastly experienced in scientific, research and practical work in the field of international law, judicature and trade policy. At the WTO Expertise Center she supervises expert work. Under her guidance our team of experts draft proposals on how to elaborate the legal stance of the Russian Federation in WTO disputes, in which the RF acts as a claimant, respondent or third party.    

Anait also researches trade policy measures of foreign governments (regional integration associations) for their consistency with the WTO rules. Special emphasis is given to drafting practical recommendations on increasing the effectiveness of operation of Russian companies in the context of the multilateral trading system and the need for adaptation to ever changing international environment.

Prior to joining our team in 2014 Anait had for over 12 years worked for PJSC Mechel where she was in charge of the following areas: domestic market protection; ensuring access to external markets; drafting proposals on streamlining trade policy measures, and interaction with government bodies on trade agenda issues. She left Mechel as Director of the Department of Market Protection and Competitive Policy Assurance.

Anait holds a post-doctoral degree in law (DJS) and possesses considerable experience of teaching international law, participating in educational events arranged by the WTO Expertise Center. She is the author of over 80 scientific papers, including three monographs, and is full professor at the international law department of the Russian Academy of Foreign Trade.
